Motherhood

What to expect, 3rd trimester

Finally, your last few months!

The last few months become exciting especially towards month 9, we all become pretty nervous right?

Have you felt any kicks?  Punches?  I loved feeling her moving around.

The last trimestre gets a bit harder again.  My hormones were all over the place, one moment I felt great and the next your miserable.  Don´t worry, this will pass, just have patience and be considerate of those around you.  Try to remember that your body is going through alot and you need to be kind to yourself.

You will probably experience back pain if you haven’t yet, and there isn’t much you can do to remedy it unfortunately. Just take breaks to lay down and rest.  I used to feel guilty, but don’t, you need the rest.

Also fatigue.  This depends on the pregnancy but in my case, I didn’t get too much.  I wasn’t too exhausted to do my daily house chores and to go out etc, but alot of woman do feel very tired in their last couple of months.  Everything is exhausting.  I must say though that I did run out of breath when walking around, which is very common.

You can also experience the need to frequently urinate, as you know by now, and constipation. To try and help out with this, eat more fibre and drink more liquids.  Always try to drink alot of water, it’s very important for you and your baby.  If it’s really bad, ask your doctor.  Anything that´s dificult for you to handle, ask your doctor about it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Something that I mentioned in my last post, are the stretch marks.  To avoid them, put cream and oils on day & night. The more you keep the skin around your tummy moisturized, the less chance there is of them appearing.  Something else that comes with the pregnancy are the varicose veins.  Try your best to move around every so often and when laying down, lift your legs up on a cushion.

Watch out for your weight again this trimester.  Pick healthy choices!  Just because you are eating for two doesn’t mean you should over eat or eat deep fried foods and snacks all day.  Yes, eat as many times as your body is asking you too but keep in mind that everything you eat goes to your baby.  So fill up on fresh fruits, leafy greens, healthy carbs and fibre.

In this trimester you will be visiting the doctor often enough, especially the last 4 weeks.  In your 9th month they will ask you to go in evey week (in Spain, anyway) to check everything is going okay. You will also be hooked up to an electronic fetal heart monitor in your last month that controls your baby’s heart beat when you have contractions. It’s pain-free so don’t worry.

So, have you felt these already, they are called the Braxton Hicks contractions? They are warm-up contractions to prepare your uterus for the real thing. They are painful and can lead to real labor. Do you know how to tell if your in labour?

You will probably be in labour when:

  1. Your water breaks
  2. Persistent abdominal pain, cramping
  3. Contractions, but these will be continuos, beeing first 15-20 min apart and breaking down to 5 min apart, at this point you should go straight to hospital
  4. You pass the mucus plug that blocks the cervix
  5. Very disrupted sleep with abdominal pains

->Enjoy this last trimester as much as you can, stay relaxed and prepare everything for you newborn!

···Watch out for these red flag symptons, visit your doctor right away···

  • Severe dizziness
  • Pain, blood or burning sensation while urination
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe cramping
  • Any bleedin

Oh and by the way, enjoy your baby shower =)
